Scientific Project and Alliance Manager

The mission of the Allen Institute for Immunology is to advance the fundamental understanding of human immunology through the study of immune health and diseases where excessive or impaired immune responses drive pathological processes. The Institute will employ a multi-disciplinary team approach in collaboration with academic centers of human immunology to generate novel mechanistic insights into the immune synapse in health and in diseases such as autoimmunity or oncology. The Institute will simultaneously provide a foundational data set and tools for future immunological research as well as a novel collaboration portal for the broader scientific community.

We are seeking a Scientific Project and Alliance Manager to join our team in supporting the mission and vision of gaining a deep understanding of the Human Immune System during health and disease. The Institute utilizes an Alliance Business Model, leveraging the strengths of multiple partners dedicated to common goals advancing science and solutions in Immunology. This position, reporting to a Senior Scientific Program Manager, will support the execution of multiple projects in the area of Assay and Technology Development.The successful candidate will possess a strong scientific foundation, have exposure to cutting edge assay development and application,exposure to innovation to develop novel technologies and applications at scale, and will have demonstrated progressive abilities and responsibilities as a professional Project and Alliance Manager. As a leader, collaborator and effective communicator, this role can drive momentum and build consensus, working at the interface of multi-site and multi-disciplinary teams. This position has an expected end date of December 31, 2026 based on business needs and funding.

Essential Functions

• In partnership with scientific co-leads for projects, serve as a Project Manager to ensure the successful execution of project deliverables by supporting our cross-functional teams through planning and execution phases
• Organize and lead internal and external project meetings with clear agendas, expected outcomes, follow-up on project-related actions and performance tracking metrics
• Keep project milestones on track, anticipating and communicating at-risk deliverables. Work with team members to identify options and implement mitigation strategies
• Create, maintain, and disseminate project deliverables and timelines using project management best practices and tools
• Provide an efficient and flexible collaborative environment to manage internal and external project team communication and collaboration, leveraging software tools such as MS Teams, Google Workspace, Sharepoint, Smartsheet, etc.
• Partner with scientific staff to assist with development of competitive external funding applications (Federal and Private). Ensure that Grants Management best practices are followed
• Coordinate with the Office of Sponsored Research and support post-award execution of externally funded efforts in audit-compliant fashion including contracts, sub-awardees, budget tracking/variance reporting, prior approval requests, carry forward requests and agency reporting
• Maintain clear and consistent channels of communication and documentation with internal and external stakeholders
• Lead project teams through business-relevant processes including budgeting (forecasting and monitoring) and progress reporting
• Represent the project teams with internal finance, legal, and communications groups
• Synthesize inputs into clearly written status/progress reports, coordinating information across internal teams and external partners

Required Education and Experience

• Ph.D. degree (or equivalent combination of degree and experience) plus 1 year of project management experience in a scientific or technical environment
• Experience in the use of project management, collaboration management, communication, and dashboard/reporting tools

Preferred Education and Experience

• 2+ years of direct experience in a Project/Program Manager role, beyond an academic laboratory/postdoctoral setting with a preference for experience in a biotechnology or biopharma setting
• Formal project management training and/or PMP certification is highly desired
• Demonstrated success working with large and complex scientific projects
• A team player and leader with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to navigate challenging group dynamics, work effectively across scientific, technical, and business interfaces
• Proven track record of building and sustaining strategic collaborations, including managing relationships across geographically distributed partner sites
• Experience with federal funding applications and grants management, and leading large-scale, externally funded initiatives or consortia
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to transparent communication and effective project execution
• Financially savvy, with demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and monitor budgets and performance metrics
• Self-motivated and adaptable, thriving in complex, matrixed environments; skilled at managing ambiguity, aligning stakeholders, and influencing outcomes
• Culturally astute, with the ability to bridge differences between academic and industry settings and resolve conflicts constructively
• Resilient and change-ready, with a history of navigating transitions effectively and supporting teams through organizational change

Work Environment

• May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

• Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

• This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington state.

Annualized Salary Range

• $119,650 – $149,550 *

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
