Title: Director of Silicon Valley Philanthropy

Schedule Format - Location: San Francisco, Hybrid

Pay Information: $119,000 - $148,000 Annually

The Director of Silicon Valley Philanthropy will be responsible for securing new streams of revenue from the emergent philanthropic landscape in Silicon Valley, contributing to the sustainability of KQED’s vibrant and essential public service. This new position will develop philanthropic support from a portfolio of ultra-high net worth individuals, family foundations, and entities such as family offices, LLCs, and philanthropic advisories, often complex in nature. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of the philanthropic culture within Silicon Valley and will build a new portfolio of giving by surfacing, cultivating, and inspiring new donors and funders. This position will work together with KQED’s major gifts and grants teams, sometimes in joint cultivation with existing relationship managers, as well as with KQED leadership (executive and volunteer), to identify compelling gift opportunities and create a pathway to major gifts in support of news and programming, education services, and next-generation media platforms. This role calls for unconventional thinking and approaches, resilience to obstacles, and creativity in reaching alignment and innovation, both internally and externally.

Essential Functions: 

• Build a portfolio of major donors and prospects capable of significant philanthropy (7-to-8 figures) by initiating connections between KQED and Silicon Valley leaders such as tech entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and philanthropic leaders
• Develop and implement strategies to increase giving in relation to philanthropic advisors, donor-advised funds, and family foundations in Silicon Valley
• Undertake the full moves management cycle with this portfolio: identify prospective donors, build a pathway to connection, qualify, cultivate, and solicit transformative gifts, and provide meaningful stewardship 
• Maximize giving in support of topical, issue-based programming and news at KQED as well as special initiatives in content, technology, product, and audience development
• Serve as a thought leader, trusted partner, and strategist to the Vice President of Philanthropy and the development leadership team (foundations and grants, major giving, and gift planning) and contribute bold and forward-looking ideas and strategies to the Development plan at KQED 
• In partnership with KQED leadership and content leads, as well as leads from external partners such as PBS, NPR, national producers, and other media and journalism outlets, develop compelling and transformational giving opportunities based on institutional and industry priorities
• Collaborate with frontline fundraising team members to develop coordinated strategies and giving among portfolio-assigned donors
• Stay abreast of funding and philanthropic news and trends and advise on adapting team strategies to evolve our program
• Use research and data to unveil important intelligence that will shape relationship development and cultivation strategies
• Leverage the KQED Board and other volunteers to make inroads into new philanthropic constituencies
• Participate in fundraising meetings with executive and board leadership 
• With Vice President of Philanthropy, develop KPIs that support meeting these objectives
• Create reports and presentations that showcase the impact of your work and of our team’s successes

Candidate qualifications:

• 7-10 years experience working in Bay Area philanthropy 
• Track record of major and principal gifts work within complex organizations or institutions
• Intimate familiarity with Bay Area philanthropy, families (including family offices), and institutions (including nontraditional giving entities), as well as political donors and giving in the Bay Area
• Working knowledge of the technology sector and related areas, including Silicon Valley philanthropy trends
• Entrepreneurial mindset and motivation to build a program comprising support from previously unaffiliated supporters
• Experience consensus building internally and externally around gift strategies and proposals
• Sound judgment and ability to navigate gray areas with wisdom and doggedness
• Fluency and understanding of complex gift vehicles and types of charitable entities
